Senior Congress leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, AK Antony, Ambika Soni, KC Venugopal today met Congress president Sonia Gandhi at her residence.

New Delhi: Senior Congress leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, AK Antony, Ambika Soni, KC Venugopal met interim Congress president Sonia Gandhi at her residence on Friday. There has been no official word from the grand old party regarding the agenda of the high-level meeting. It was also unclear whether Rahul Gandhi was part of the deliberations.

Notably, the meeting of the Congress top leadership comes a day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met Sonia and Rahul Gandhi amid reports that the Trinamool Congress president is trying to unite the entire Opposition to take on the Narendra Modi-led BJP in 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

After meeting with Sonia Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee said it will “depend on the situation” who becomes the face of the Opposition to take on the BJP.

“It is a continuous process… When Modi will fight the next election, it will be with the country. I want to see sachhe din, bahut achhe din dekh liya (I want to see truthful days, have seen enough of good days,” the Trinamool Congress chief said.

When asked to comment on whether she would be meeting other Opposition party leaders, Banerjee said she has cordial relations with BJD’s Naveen Patnaik (BJD), YSRCP’s Jagan Mohan Reddy DMK’s M K Stalin (DMK) and others.

“If all regional parties come together, it will be stronger than the one-party system. Aaj agar nahi ho sake to kal hojayega. When there’s a political storm, you cannot stop it,” she said.

Also, Congress has been leading the Opposition protest in Parliament over a host of issues, including Pegasus snooping, farmers’ protest, fuel prices and the COVID-19 situation.

Meanwhile, sources have told Times Now that Sonia Gandhi is expected to remain the interim president of Congress till 2024 General elections.

The Congress leadership is expected completely overhaul the party and appoint four working presidents who would assist Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in taking key party decisions. The names of Sachin Pilot, Kumari Selja, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mukul Wasnik and Ramesh Chennithala are doing rounds for the post of working presidents in Congress.
