Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pledge to expand medical insurance coverage under Ayushman Bharat to all Indians aged 70 and above has struck a chord with over six crore senior citizens across India. This initiative, included in the BJP’s manifesto, aims to address the gap in medical insurance accessibility for the elderly, particularly in the middle-class segment.

According to a Union minister, the decision to incorporate this provision stemmed from extensive public feedback. Many insurance companies refrain from offering coverage to individuals above 70 due to anticipated high claim rates. For those that do, exorbitant premiums often deter middle-class families from availing such policies.

Government sources highlighted the existing pre-ailment clauses that exclude coverage for pre-existing conditions for an initial period of two to three years. This limitation significantly reduces the effectiveness of insurance policies despite hefty premiums. Considering the vulnerability of the elderly population, especially post-pandemic, to ailments like heart disease, kidney disorders, and respiratory illnesses, the need for comprehensive medical coverage is more pressing than ever.

The BJP’s move to extend Ayushman Bharat benefits to individuals aged 70 and above, encompassing over six crore citizens, has garnered widespread appreciation. This initiative not only addresses the healthcare needs of seniors but also alleviates financial burdens on their families.

BJP MP Manoj Tiwari commended the Prime Minister’s empathy, noting that the initiative reflects a deeply humane approach. Under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, which already provides free medical insurance of up to Rs 5 lakh per year to impoverished families, the BJP has pledged to include every individual above 70 years of age.

PM Modi’s commitment to extending healthcare benefits to seniors underscores the government’s dedication to inclusive policies and welfare measures. This initiative not only cushions the middle class from healthcare expenses but also enhances the BJP’s appeal to voters ahead of the 2024 elections.
