The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will soon release an advertisement for a new coach, as disclosed by Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary in Mumbai on Wednesday .

“Rahul’s tenure is only up to June. So if he wants to apply, he is free to do so,” the BCCI secretary said. Other members of the coaching staff, such as batting, bowling, and fielding coaches, will be decided after consultation with the new coach. Shah did not rule out the possibility of a foreign coach and left the issue open-ended.

“We cannot determine whether the new coach will be Indian or foreign. It will be up to the CAC, and we are a global body,” the BCCI official said, hinting that the board is unlikely to consider different coaches for different formats, a system adopted by boards like the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and even the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

“That decision will also be made by the CAC. There are many all-format players, like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Rishabh Pant, among others. Moreover, there is no precedent for such a situation in India.”

Shah confirmed that the new coach will be appointed for a long term and will serve for an initial period of three years.

Shah was non-committal on the continuation of the Impact Player rule in the Indian Premier League (IPL), stating that it will be decided after consultation with captains and coaches. However, he stressed on the significance of the rule, which allows two extra Indian players to be in the XI of an IPL side.

“Impact player was a test case. Two new Indian players are getting a chance in the IPL,” he stressed when it was pointed out that the rule might not favor all-rounders. “We will discuss with the stakeholders – franchises and broadcasters – before deciding on the continuation of the Impact Player. It’s not permanent, but no one has provided feedback against the rule,” he said.

The meeting with the franchises, he revealed, will be conducted soon, along with the finalisation of the retention rules. He also clarified that there have been no discussions on reviving the Champions League Twenty20 tournament, contrary to recent claims made by an official from Cricket Victoria, affiliated with Cricket Australia, in Mumbai.

Shah left everyone guessing whether he will be taking up the International Cricket Council (ICC) chairmanship in November, as is being widely speculated, but did disclose that discussions will be held regarding the possibility of holding the World Test Championship (WTC) final outside of England.

While emphasizing the importance of red-ball cricket, Shah stated that increasing the remuneration for domestic players will be left to the respective state associations. He also revealed that Hardik Pandya, who has been awarded an A grade in Central Contracts, has agreed to play white-ball domestic cricket.

Furthermore, he mentioned that the structure of domestic cricket will be unveiled soon, and confirmed that the High-Performance Centre at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru will be operational from August.
