The Supreme Court of India is set to announce its verdict on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s interim bail plea on May 10. Kejriwal, arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in connection to a money laundering case linked to the excise policy scam, awaits the decision while in judicial custody at Tihar Jail.
Previously, the court reserved its order on Kejriwal’s bail plea, emphasizing that if granted, he should abstain from official responsibilities. Simultaneously, a Delhi court extended his judicial custody till May 20.
During the proceedings, ED opposed Kejriwal’s interim bail, prompting criticism from AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj, alleging double standards by the government agency. However, senior advocate Kapil Sibal argued that while campaigning may be a legal right, bail for those convicted can be granted, citing examples like Hardik Patel.
ED filed a new affidavit, contending that bail for election campaigning isn’t a legal or fundamental right, fearing it would set a wrong precedent. The Supreme Court is expected to deliver its ruling on Kejriwal’s bail plea today.
