This morning, a tragic incident occurred at Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1 when a portion of the roof collapsed onto parked cars amid heavy rain, resulting in one fatality and six injuries. The collapse led to immediate suspension of all departures and closure of check-in counters as a precautionary measure, according to a Delhi airport spokesperson. Terminal 1, which serves only domestic flights, faced significant disruptions as a result.
All departing flights from IndiGo and SpiceJet at Terminal 1 are cancelled until 2 PM today. The collapse, reported around 5:30 AM to the Delhi Fire Services (DFS), involved the failure of roof sheets and support beams, damaging multiple vehicles, including cabs, in the pick-up and drop-off area of the terminal at Indira Gandhi International Airport, one of the busiest airports globally.
During the rescue operations, emergency personnel extricated a man from a car struck by a falling iron beam. An official statement from the airport confirmed that the canopy at the old departure forecourt collapsed due to the intense rainfall early this morning. Emergency teams are on-site, providing medical aid and assistance to the injured.
Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu is actively monitoring the situation, ensuring that the injured receive prompt medical care. “First responders are working at the site. Also advised the airlines to assist all affected passengers at T1. The injured have been evacuated to hospital,” he posted on social media.
IndiGo has reported disruptions in their flight operations due to the structural damage at Terminal 1. The airline stated that while passengers already inside the terminal can board their flights, those scheduled to depart later will be offered alternatives. They also advised customers to check their flight status before heading to the airport.
Delhi has been experiencing heavy rain for the second consecutive day, which, while bringing relief from the scorching heat, has caused waterlogging in several areas of the city. The airport incident is a stark reminder of the potential dangers posed by extreme weather conditions. The airport authorities and emergency services are working tirelessly to manage the situation and ensure the safety of all passengers and staff.
