In a recent development, the Delhi Police have filed an FIR against Krishnanagar TMC MP Mahua Moitra following her controversial remarks against National Commission for Women (NCW) chief Rekha Sharma. This action comes after Moitra’s post, which the NCW deemed derogatory, was brought to their attention.
Legal Action and Allegations
Moitra has been booked under Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), which deals with actions intended to outrage the modesty of a woman. DCP (PRO) Suman Nalwa confirmed this, noting that the IFSO unit of the Delhi Police registered the FIR on Sunday.
The Controversial Post
The controversy began when Moitra posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) showing NCW chief Rekha Sharma arriving at the site of a stampede in Hathras. The video, which Moitra later deleted, depicted a man holding an umbrella and walking behind Sharma. The NCW took suo motu cognizance of the post, calling it crude and a violation of a woman’s right to dignity.
In its official complaint, the NCW stated, “The crude remarks made by Moitra are extremely outrageous and a sheer violation of a woman’s right to live with dignity.” They demanded an FIR against Moitra and requested a detailed action report within three days.
Moitra’s Response
In response to the NCW’s post, Moitra tweeted: “Come on Delhi Police, please take action immediately on suo motu orders. I am in Nadia in case you need me in the next 3 days to make a quick arrest. I Can Hold My Own Umbrella.”
This case has sparked significant media attention, highlighting the ongoing tensions between political figures and the authorities.
