Princess Anne has spoken out following a horse-related accident that left her hospitalized and with memory loss. The incident, which resulted in a concussion, has caused her to miss several royal engagements, including a significant event in Canada to honor war heroes.
The Accident and Its Aftermath
After spending five days in the hospital due to head injuries, Princess Anne recently returned home to recover. The concussion has necessitated her withdrawal from nine engagements last week. Among these was a notable trip to Canada, where she was scheduled to attend a ceremony marking the centenary of the Newfoundland National War Memorial. This event also commemorates the repatriation of the remains of an unknown Newfoundland soldier from the First World War battlefields in northern France.
A Message of Regret and Remembrance
Unable to attend the ceremony, Princess Anne sent a heartfelt message through the Governor General. As reported by The Mirror, her message read:
“It is with deep regret that I am unable to be with you today, as you commemorate the brave efforts and sacrifices of the members of the Newfoundland Regiment who went into battle on the first day of the Somme. I have fond memories of joining you in 2016, on the 99th occasion that the people of this Island commemorated the Battle of Beaumont Hamel, and I am deeply saddened that I’m unable to join you again, and I send you my warmest best wishes on this special day of commemoration.”
The Impact of Her Absence
Former royal butler Grant Harrold suggested that at 73, Princess Anne might need to stay away from royal duties for several weeks, noting the significant impact her absence will have. Similarly, former BBC Royal Correspondent Michael Cole mentioned to GB News that Anne “chose not to be pictured” upon leaving Southmead Hospital in Bristol with her husband. Cole added, “What is known is that the princess will not be returning to royal duties, which she is a very keen pursuer of such, for the foreseeable future.”
Princess Anne’s message underscores her deep commitment to her duties and the emotional toll of being unable to participate in important commemorative events. Her recovery remains a priority as she steps back from her rigorous schedule.
