The Supreme Court on Friday revised its August 11 directive on stray dog management in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). The court ordered that stray dogs, after sterilisation and immunisation, must be returned to their original locations.
The court clarified that dogs showing aggressive behaviour or infected with rabies will not be released back. These animals must be kept in designated shelters for safety.
“Stray dogs will return to their original areas after sterilisation and vaccination, except for those infected with rabies or exhibiting aggressive behaviour,” the court ruled.
The August 11 order had instructed authorities to begin relocating stray dogs from all localities to shelters “at the earliest.” The revised directive now balances public safety with animal welfare, ensuring humane treatment while addressing residents’ concerns.
Public reaction at Jantar Mantar was jubilant, with supporters and activists celebrating the decision. Prominent figures, including Rahul Gandhi and comedian Vir Das, welcomed the verdict, highlighting the importance of compassionate animal management.
