Trump’s Envoy Pick Urges India to Buy US Oil, Cites Middle Class MarketTrump’s Envoy Pick Urges India to Buy US Oil, Cites Middle Class Market

US President Donald Trump’s nominee for ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, has said Washington wants New Delhi to boost purchases of American crude and petroleum products. Speaking at a Senate committee hearing, Gor highlighted India’s 1.4 billion population and rapidly growing middle class, calling it a market even larger than the US.

Push for US Oil Exports

Gor said the ongoing US-India trade talks aim to open Indian markets to crude oil, LNG, and petroleum products. He emphasized that the expanding Indian middle class creates “countless possibilities” for US exports. The remarks come amid US pressure on India to cut Russian oil imports, which New Delhi has firmly defended as driven by national interest.

India-US Relationship Despite Strains

The envoy-designate described the bond between Trump and Prime Minister Modi as unique, saying disagreements over tariffs and energy trade will be resolved soon. He underlined that US-India ties are “warmer and deeper” compared to India’s relations with China, noting that both nations share long-term strategic goals.

China Factor and Strategic Cooperation

Commenting on India’s engagement with China at the SCO summit, Gor said, “International relations are more than photo opportunities.” He insisted that the US will make it a top priority to keep India aligned with Washington, especially in the face of Chinese expansionism.

Trade Disputes Near Resolution

Gor told senators that the two countries are “not far apart” on a tariff deal, expressing optimism for a resolution in the coming weeks. He acknowledged India’s past protectionist policies but said collaboration in AI, pharmaceuticals, and critical minerals offers vast opportunities.

Signs of a Reset

Despite friction over tariffs and Russian oil imports, US officials signaled a reset in ties. Gor called the partnership with India one of America’s top global relationships. Trump recently softened his tone, stressing friendship with Modi and reaffirming ongoing talks to address trade barriers.
