New Delhi, Sep 11: India’s Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, welcomed President Donald Trump’s nomination of Sergio Gor as the next American envoy to New Delhi. Trump announced Gor’s name last month, ending months of speculation.
Kwatra said Gor ranks among Trump’s most trusted aides. He stressed that the choice shows the priority of India-US ties.
“I welcome that President Trump is sending one of his most trusted aides, @SergioGor, to serve as the next US Ambassador to India,” Kwatra posted on X.
He added that Gor’s nomination commits both countries to stronger friendship and closer ties.
India and US Restart Trade Talks
Kwatra’s remarks came as India and the US restarted trade talks. Trump recently imposed 50% tariffs on Indian imports, effective August 27.
On Wednesday, Trump said he has begun fresh negotiations with India and looks forward to meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Modi responded that the talks will unlock the “limitless potential” of India-US trade.
Sergio Gor Steps Into Key Diplomatic Role
Sergio Gor, 38, currently heads the White House Presidential Personnel Office. Trump nominated him as the next US Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asia.
Trump said: “I am promoting Sergio Gor to be our next United States Ambassador to the Republic of India.”
Gor will soon face the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for his confirmation hearing.
Senior US leaders, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Vice President JD Vance, FBI Director Kash Patel, and Under Secretary of Defence Elbridge Colby, have backed his nomination.
