Delhi commuters are set to witness a significant change in the Metro network, as Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has officially announced the renaming of three metro stations, one existing and two upcoming. According to the CM, this move aims to improve passenger convenience, provide clearer geographical identity, and enhance the overall travel experience across the city’s high-traffic corridors.
Why the Name Change?
While addressing the media on Sunday (November 16), the Chief Minister explained that several metro stations currently carry names that do not fully reflect the areas they serve. As a result, many passengers, especially tourists, new residents, and senior citizens, face confusion when navigating the network.
To solve this issue, the government has decided to rename specific stations so they align better with their local landmarks, neighbourhood significance, and commuting patterns. The CM added that this step will become even more important once new corridors under Delhi Metro Phase 4 become operational.
Key Station Renamed: Pitampura → Madhuban Chowk
One of the most notable changes is the renaming of the well-known Pitampura Metro Station, situated on the Red Line in northwest Delhi. The station will now officially be called Madhuban Chowk Metro Station.
Why this renaming matters
- Madhuban Chowk is a major junction and commercial hub that attracts heavy daily footfall.
- The new name brings greater clarity to travellers trying to reach markets, offices, restaurants, and adjoining residential blocks.
- After the completion of the RK Puram–Janakpuri corridor, part of the Magenta Line Phase 4 expansion, the station will also function as a major interchange point, making the name shift even more relevant.
Two More Stations to Be Renamed
Along with Pitampura, the Delhi government confirmed that two upcoming metro stations under the Phase 4 project will also receive updated names. The official list will be communicated in a government notification soon, and signage updates will be executed in phases across platforms, entry gates, and inside trains.
Impact on Commuters
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is expected to roll out:
- Updated route maps
- New in-station signboards
- Train announcements featuring the revised names
- Navigation updates across mobile apps and Google Maps
This transition will be carried out gradually to ensure that passengers do not face sudden confusion or travel disruptions.

What Happens Next?
The renaming process will officially start once DMRC receives the government’s approval order. Authorities have assured commuters that the transition will be smooth, and all digital and physical communication channels will be updated well before the new names come into effect.
With this step, the Delhi government hopes to make the city’s lifeline, its metro network, easier to navigate and more reflective of the communities it connects.
