New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was hospitalized after being attacked during a public hearing at her residence on Tuesday morning. A man, reportedly in his 40s, approached the Chief Minister during her weekly Jansunwai session and launched the attack. Security personnel immediately apprehended the suspect, who had disguised himself as a complainant. He is currently in police custody and being questioned.
Preliminary reports identify the attacker as Rajesh Sakaria from Rajkot, Gujarat. The Chief Minister was rushed to the hospital for medical attention, while top Delhi Police officials secured her residence.
Eyewitnesses stated that the attacker had approached the Chief Minister with some papers and suddenly launched the assault. Senior BJP leader Harish Khurana condemned the attack, saying, “Doctors are examining the Chief Minister. It should be investigated whether this was politically motivated.”
Delhi BJP leaders, including Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, suspect a political conspiracy behind the attack. “Rivals cannot tolerate the Chief Minister’s work on the ground. An investigation is underway to identify those behind the attacker,” Sirsa said.
Former Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leader Atishi also condemned the attack. “There is no place for violence in a democracy. Disagreements can exist, but violence cannot be tolerated. We hope Delhi Police take strict action against the culprits. We pray for the Chief Minister’s safety,” she said.
Delhi Police sources confirmed that a detailed inquiry will be conducted to understand how such a major security lapse occurred. Delhi Police Commissioner SBK Singh will personally oversee the investigation.
