
New Delhi: Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya, who attacked Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during the Jan Sunwai event on Wednesday, has been sent to a five-day police remand. Delhi Police had registered an attempt to murder case against the 41-year-old on the same day. Authorities are interrogating him to determine the motive behind the attack.
A Delhi Police statement said, “A case under Sections 109, 132, and 221 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered at PS Civil Lines. The accused is in police custody, and investigation is ongoing from all possible angles.”
Rajesh has been charged under:
- Section 109 BNS – Attempt to murder
- Section 132 BNS – Obstructing a public servant
- Section 221 BNS – Obstructing a public servant in discharge of public functions
The police added that teams from central agencies and the Special Cell are interrogating Rajesh. He arrived in Delhi from Rajkot by train on Tuesday morning, stayed at Gujarati Bhavan in Civil Lines, and visited CM Gupta’s private residence in Shalimar Bagh. He also informed a friend about his plans via phone, police said.
Details of his criminal record show that at least five cases are registered against him at Bhaktinagar Police Station in Rajkot. He has been acquitted in four cases, while one case is pending, with the next hearing on September 9. Gujarat Police have been contacted for further information.
