Tianjin, China: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin pledged to deepen India–Russia cooperation during their meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.

The talks came as India faces steep U.S. tariffs on crude oil imports from Russia. Despite pressure from Washington and Europe, both leaders expressed satisfaction over progress in economic, financial, and energy partnerships.

Modi emphasized the “special and privileged strategic partnership” with Russia, saying, “Even in the worst of times, India and Russia have maintained close ties. Our partnership not only benefits our people but also contributes to global peace, stability, and growth.”

The Ministry of External Affairs said discussions covered trade, energy security, and broader bilateral cooperation. Modi also called for an immediate end to the Russia–Ukraine conflict, stressing the need for constructive dialogue and stable peace.

The renewed assurances come amid criticism from the West, which accuses India of indirectly funding Moscow’s war effort through crude purchases. New Delhi, however, has pushed back, pointing out that China and Europe remain larger buyers of Russian oil and gas yet face no punitive measures.

The U.S. recently imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods, among the highest in the world, after stalled trade talks. Analysts believe New Delhi’s balancing act with Moscow highlights its pursuit of strategic autonomy despite growing global tensions.
